DIY: Christmas Tree Skirt

29 Nov

Last year I was on the hunt for a Christmas tree skirt that was nice, but not super expensive.  I never succeeded, so this year one of my girlfriends recommended DIYing one.  I’ve watched every season of Project Runway, and since a tree skirt is essentially a ladies circle skirt, I was convinced I could do it.

The whole process took me a few hours, mainly because I spent about an hour fighting with the sewing machine.

Supplies you will need:

  • about 2 yards of upholstery fabric (a square is perfect)
  • 4+ yards of trim (depending on the size of your circle)
  • string
  • marker
  • sewing machine/thread
  • hot glue gun

  1. Lay square of fabric flat, wrong side up.
  2. Fold fabric in half.
  3. Fold fabric in half again.
  4. And again.
  5. Tie a piece of string to a marker, we will be making something similar to a compass from 5th grade math class to create a perfect circle.  The length of the string should be the length of the radius that you desire for the tree skirt.  Hold loose end of the string at the pointy end of your folded fabric.  Use marker to draw a semi-circle.  Cut along your drawn line.
  6. Repeat the string compass step (with much shorter string) for the “trunk hole” of the skirt.
  7. Cut along the drawn line.
  8. Cut along the dotted line in the diagram above.  Sew along each of the sides of the cut that you just made, as well as around the circle.  Hot glue (or sew) trim around the outside edge.

And there you have it!  A complete Christmas tree skirt for just around $20!

Here are some photos of my tree skirt in action.  And yes, I had to have my husband do the cutting!  Now lets hope that we actually get a Christmas tree sometime in the near future so the skirt can be put to good use!

Christmas is the ultimate DIY holiday!  I have so many projects lined up, stay tuned!
